Overview of the RLC Project
The Russian Land Cover project provides 12 map data products --
land cover, forested area, forest carbon content, and administrative
information -- for Russia and the former USSR.
The Russian Land Cover data archived and distributed by the ORNL DAAC were generated by scientists at the Woods Hole Research Center. RLC Related Resources

Studying the Forests
The USSR was a vast country covering one-sixth of the total land area of
the Earth, with environments varying from polar regions to subtropical
deserts. Furthermore, the
Russian boreal forests constitute the largest
forested region on Earth. Information on land cover and land use change
is important for understanding the ecological, biogeochemical, climatological,
and hydrological functioning of these forests and their response to land
use change. In addition, this information will provide the basis for studies
of the interactions between northern Eurasia and the Earth system.
